Christ in or out of Christmas?

In this time of glad tidings, there's also no small amount hand-wringing on the one, er, hand, and disdain on the other. While some cry for a return of a Christ-centered to Christmas, others say "hey, it's not our holiday, so buzz off." Brit Robin Parry calls for a distinction between Advent and "Mad-spent," Christmas and "Wintermas" in his Christ-out-of-Christmas post, which finally is shares a lot in common with Russell King's put-Christ-back-IN-Christmas plea -- make space for those who celebrate differently. Peace, those greeting cards say. peace.

I have been grappling with this lately too. Mostly taking offense to the movement that's trying to stop me from saying Happy Holidays.

"It's political correctness gone amok," they say. But really, who is doing the bossing around in this case? I haven't heard a single position that asks Christians to stop saying Merry Christmas (aside from the link included in Kristin's post). However, instead I have experienced a deluge of pressure from Christmas Supremacists insisting that people stop saying happy holidays.

No matter what majority Christians may be, they do have an exclusive claim to the winter holiday season. There is more than one holiday in the season, and I wish happy ones to all, whatever it is they celebrate.
