It Doesn’t Get Old

Last week I received the galley (an early proof for reviewers) of my upcoming book DIE FOR YOU, which will publish in June 2009. It’s beautiful – another stunning cover from the folks at Random House. And when it arrived I was washed over with the same sense of thrilled excitement and gratitude as I was when I received the galley of my first book. Holding it in my hands, I was reminded that this is the only thing I ever wanted to do with my life . I am so grateful that I was able to find my way here.

I remember when I told my grandfather that my first book was going to be published, he said, “Lis! You did it!” It was an acknowledgement that my years of writing and dreaming and trying to get published meant something – to him, to me. My grandfather is gone now, but whenever I have one of those moments, like holding the galley of my next novel, I think: “You did it!”

Make no mistake about it. The writing life has its very hard days, like anything we do that means something to us. There are as many crushing lows as there are dizzying highs. As many agonizing failures, as there are soaring successes. And the road to this place was a long one. So it’s easy sometimes to lose sight of gratitude for a moment or two. Okay, sometimes a day or two. But I generally try to snap back pretty quickly, remembering that there were days when I didn’t think I would get here at all.

Without my supporters, readers, friends and booksellers, I wouldn’t have. So as the holidays descend and we are all swept away in the buying, wrapping, sending, preparing for guests or for travel, I’d like to take a deep breath and say, “Thank you.” Thank you for reading, for spreading the word, for your comments, for showing up at my book signings, and for just staying in touch with me. It means the world to me to have this fellowship with my readers.

In the weeks ahead I may say a word or two about the upcoming book DIE FOR YOU. I know, it would be nice for me to tell you what it’s about right now. But I wouldn’t be doing my job unless I kept you in suspense. (Insert maniacal laughter here.) Until then I’ll be dwelling in a place of gratitude that I am always thrilled, always excited when I see my books on the shelf, or when I hear from someone who read and took the time out to share his or her thoughts. It just never gets old.

I wish you all the very happiest of holidays, filled with love, laughter and friendship. I hope you are surrounded by people whom you adore and who adore you, and that you experience a bare minimum of family dysfunction. And I hope the year ahead brings you every happiness and success. You deserve it. You really do.

Confession:
I’ve already forgotten by reusable shopping sacks twice since my resolution! But once I just piled everything into the stroller. The other time – for shame! – I took the plastic bags. But I’ll reuse, then recycle!

I am thrilled to announce that BLACK OUT has been optioned by longtime Martin Scorsese producer Barbara De Fina, the outrageously talented writer and director Austin Chick, and Andrew Kletjian.

Austin has written, directed and produced two brilliant, quality films, XX/XY and August, both of which I loved. He also provided uncredited contributions to the script of Sidney Lumet's Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, one of my favorite films this year. Barbara De Fina's resumé reads like a list of everyone's favorite films. She has produced such blockbuster classics as Goodfellas, Casino, Cape Fear, The Age of Innocence and The Color of Money, to name just a few.

I am so excited to have these mega-talented people attached to BLACK OUT.

For more info, read this fantastic article in The Hollywood Reporter.

All the best,
L

This morning, BLACK OUT was featured on the Today Show as one of the Top 10 summer reads!

The host saw the cover and said "Oooh, this looks creepy." (Who could ask for a better reaction). And the wonderful John Searles from Cosmopolitan said ...

I was a big fan of the author’s debut novel, "Beautiful Lies.” This time, she’s back with a novel about a woman leading a pretty comfy life in a Florida suburb until some dark memories from her past begin to surface. As she sets out to uncover the truth behind these memories, her world turns upside down. The book is full of twists and turns. A great read for anyone craving some suspense.

Thanks to all of the tremendous support from readers, booksellers and my wonderful publisher Vintage Crime/ Black Lizard, the mass-market edition of Beautiful Lies will debut on the New York Times bestseller list on May 25. It is also in its second week on the USA Today bestseller list!

Tomorrow is the mass market publication of BEAUTIFUL LIES. My first book writing as Lisa Unger, BEAUTIFUL LIES was an instant New York Times bestseller, published in 25 countries. It was a Booksense pick, and was chosen as Amazon.com editors as one of the best books of 2006. The trade paperback edition has just gone into its sixth printing. Amazing. I'm thrilled and grateful.

BEAUTIFUL LIES and SLIVER OF TRUTH, the story of writer Ridley Jones, came from a very personal and organic place. And her story parallels a lot of themes that were current to my life at the time. Both books are thrillers, of course, with lots of twists and turns and mayhem but Ridley’s story is also a coming of age tale; it’s the coming of age most of us experience in our thirties, where we realize that it’s not about where we came from, or what we did or didn’t get from our parents that makes our lives what they are. It’s about the choices we make – the little one, the big ones – that define the course of our lives. If you haven't met Ridley yet, you might take this opportunity to get to know her.

The brilliant design company (authorbytes.com) who created my amazing website created this killer video trailer (Click on "Watch Video About The Book") for BEAUTIFUL LIES! And there is also a podcast about the music that inspired me while writing the novel.

Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy!

I’m thrilled that Publishers Weekly had some lovely things to say about BLACK OUT in a starred review earlier this month. And, as if that wasn’t enough, there’s an author Q & A in this week’s issue. Hope you have a second to check it out!

Love hurts … sometimes it even kills.

When I finished my New York Times bestselling thriller Beautiful Lies, I didn’t think I’d hear from Ridley Jones again. I knew the ending wasn’t an easy one, but I figured: That’s life. Ridley lives to fight another day. Sometimes that’s the best we get.

But I soon realized she had a lot more to say. I simply couldn’t stop hearing her voice. Some of the unresolved issues at the end of Beautiful Lies didn’t rest as easily with me as I thought they would. So I continued Ridley’s story in SLIVER OF TRUTH. And even I didn’t expect there to be so much mayhem ahead. So, all I can say is: Buckle up. In SLIVER OF TRUTH Ridley realizes that life as she knows it has ended -- and the trouble is just beginning …

SLIVER OF TRUTH just released in a gorgeous trade paperback edition. Inside you’ll find a reader’s guide, as well as an excerpt from my upcoming release BLACK OUT. It’s nice, the paperback release. It’s like having a baby without any labor pains – the book’s been written forever, you already know what people are going to say about it; very little stress involved. Unlike a new hardcover release which is like giving birth to a baby, without an epidural, in a cave somewhere in the third world. Stressful doesn’t begin to cover it.

But SLIVER OF TRUTH is out there, a lovely blue, on front tables of happy bookstores (virtual and actual) across the country – and the world, for that matter. And I wish them all well, hope each and every one finds a loving home.

Ridley is a globetrotter, we know this. One might find her in France, Germany, The Netherlands, to name just a few of the places publishing her adventures. Thanks to the stellar foreign rights people at Crown, BEAUTIFUL LIES and SLIVER OF TRUTH have been sold in 26 territories and counting. So I am thrilled and privileged to hear from readers around the world who are connecting with Ridley; one morning I had email from readers in three different countries. Amazing!

The most recent of these sales was to Arrow, an imprint of Random House UK. They will be publishing BEAUTIFUL LIES, SLIVER OF TRUTH and the next two books (more details to come). It’s a wonderful arrangement and I’m very excited (even more so because they’ll be coordinating with my pals at Random House Australia who have done a FANTASTIC job with BL and SLIVER).

From the Arrow press release:

BEAUTIFUL LIES will be published in hardback in spring 2008, with both the paperback of BEAUTIFUL LIES and the hardback of the second Ridley Jones novel, SLIVER OF TRUTH, following six months later.

In addition to her New York Times bestseller success, Lisa Unger is also already a major seller for Random House Australia.

Kate Elton, Arrow Publishing Director said: ‘I’m hugely excited to be adding Lisa Unger to Arrow’s list of bestselling crime and thriller authors. She’s a fantastically good writer, and Ridley Jones is a brilliant series character with huge potential.’
